Slugs!

I found these slug eggs at the bottom of our wood pile today – they may look like a pearly bracelet (or cod liver oil capsules) now, but they will turn into big fat, destroy everything without compassion, slugs. The helpful people on Autumn Watches message board tell me they will become large leopard slugs. Needless to say they have all been squashed!

Roof terrace – Shoreditch

Another picture of Brix Smith-Starts roof terrace. I used powder coated planters to add a punch of colour. This is the view through a gateway. When the gate is closed it gives the impression of just a small terrace – the big space beyond comes as a real surprise, with lush planting, a pergola , hammock and window cut out of the fence to frame the cityscape.

Tomatoes

To grow these Golden Sunrise tomatoes I did almost nothing. They self seeded in my planters outside from last years sowings and due to a busy year I barely watered them or pinched them out. Thanks though to a wet august and then indian summer they are just as they should be, sweet and juicy. Last year, even with far more tending because it was so dry they were fluffy and tasteless!

Pizza East Portabello

A recent planting design for Pizza East Portabello as it’s a shady site i’ve used evergreen jasmine (trachelospermum jasminoides) to cover the trellis and ferns to give lushness.

Flower Salad

A flower salad. Nasturtiums, heartsease and white and blue borage flowers with cos lettuce. Nasturtiums and borage grown in my large wicker planters and heartsease squeezed in underneath an acer.

Shoreditch House

A planting design for the original roof garden of Shoreditch House private members club, East London. This was an adventurous brief considering its very high location. We planted a large herb bed with medicinal, culinary and flowering herbs, a rose garden with many lemony, heady scented roses and a kitchen garden with espalier figs and planted crates of vegetables.

Planting Design

One of many planting designs for other designers / landscapers in West London. The client wanted more privacy and low maintenance planting with all year round interest. Tall evergreen shrubs have been mixed with softer grasses and acers. A simple colour scheme of dark red, silver and glossy green was chosen to complement the clean linear landscape design.

Small Town Garden

This is one of many small urban gardens that I have designed over the years. Designed for a young professional couple with a small budget living in Stoke Newington, London. They wanted to do some gardening but within limits, so small borders were created with a mixture of low maintenance evergreens and flowering perennials. An oak railway sleeper seat was designed to add height and interest, whilst combining a raised bed at either end to change the planting levels. Indian raj sandstone was used as a cheap alternative to york stone and slate chips were used to cover the concrete side access to save the cost of digging it up.

Wildlife Garden

A wildlife garden in Wanstead, created in memory of the owner’s late partner who loved gardening. A lot of time and care went into researching the plants she had loved. The main framework of the garden was created by a meandering london yellow brick path that allowed for huge sweeping borders either side. The path was intended to take you on a journey through a lifetime’s love of gardening, with a wildlife pond, many native plants and even a nod to Sissinghurst’s white garden.
